Local/State Government Internships

Local/State government internships can be a great way to obtain experience in your chosen field. These opportunities are usually designed to provide students with a rare, hands-on experience at the local and state level that can help prepare students for future careers in public service. Interns who elect to participate in these types of internships can have a one-of-a-kind opportunity to interact with elected and appointed officials, government agencies and the media.

From Accounting to Zoology, local and state government internships can vary in length and scope. Municipalities, city and state government offices offer paid or unpaid opportunities and can be full-time or part-time. Successful internships will allow students to tie theory based learning with “real world” application. Hint: investigate “fellowships” as many local and state government agencies offer year-long programs directed at recent graduates or an undergraduates who are contemplating pursuing a professional degree.
