Before Starting an Internship Search

What are some of your professional goals/career interests?

Consider the following:

  • What type of work have you dreamed about doing?
  • Where do you see yourself working five years from now? Ten?
  • What are the skills and experiences that you can start building now that will help you make those dreams a reality?

Once answered, students can build a top ten list of employers of interest for a potential internship.

What type of organizations are you interested in?

Organizations come in all shapes and sizes, from Fortune 500 companies and federal agencies to local non-profit organizations. Issues to consider are size, location, ownership and corporate culture.

Where do you want to have your internship?

There are several different internship options available to students, as far as local, national or international. Things to consider are housing, cost, travel and daily transportation. Students might consider building a professional network in certain cities (domestic or international) that will help them achieve their ultimate goals. Paid internship opportunities can offset the cost required to participate in an internship outside of Miami. Some employers or internship programs may even cover travel and offer housing accommodations.

When to do an internship?

Internships are competitive, so employers place application deadlines on the positions they offer. Be cognizant of this during the planning process. If looking for an internship experience during the Fall semester, start looking in the Spring or Summer. Students should remember preparing a great resume, cover letter, and practicing interview skills are important to secure an internship. Visit a Career Services Office to learn about the process.

What type of internship is being offered?

Internships can be paid or unpaid, for credit or no credit, full time or part time. Each type has pros and cons to consider. Career Services can offer insight on the different types of internships and offer advice on what options work best
